The Map that never dies

That design I made in 2002/2003 just won't go away.

The lovely and much respect Simon Garfield just adopted it for the endpapers of his forthcoming new book called "On The Map".

And following all the hoo-har are around Apple's new mapping utility on the iPhone5, Frank Jacobs (he of the strangemaps blog & book) also cited my design in todays Guardian. http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/interactive/2012/sep/07/weird-maps-to-rival-apple-in-pictures

It's quite amazing how often this thing comes up in various web searches. Try it for yourself: just type in these words to google images for example "metro map", "Subway map", or even "rail map" - my funny litlle pastiche comes up in the first ten or pages of each.

I'm feeling a whole new book coming on: the evolution of a crazy design into a worldwide phenomenon!

Anyway just thought you map lovers might want to know. Enjoy!

"Great Railway Maps of the World" is out this week on Penguin's "Particular Books" imprint. It's also a hardback which looks really fab - they've done a nice job on the cover.

It's here on:Amazon

If you like maps and mapping do please give it a look and it would be hugely helpful to me if you could blog/talk about it!?

Thanks

WHAT THE RAILWAYS GAVE US

This is the viral we are starting to put round about to galvanise a bit of interest about the book.
What's amazing to observe is just how closely those strings of lights across the great landmasses mirror the paths of the transcontinental railways.
Basically it was the railways that drove the industrial revolution and enabled people to settle inland.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LOVES RAIL MAPS

Fantasy Metro Maps

A great new fantasy map discovered here by blogger Brian Cook:

He's invented a Metro system for the city of Hartford and created a great, clear, net and whimsical Metro map - which he needs some support for.
